Floriana FC 1 vs 1 Valletta FC
Floriana earned a hard fought point against rivals Valletta whose title aspirations were dashed as the Greens notched the equalizer late in the game.
Valletta opened the score after ten minutes, it was former Floriana forward Matteo Piciollo who found himself unmarked before placing the ball behind the Floriana custodian. Both sides continued to press each other but the best chance came to Floriana on the twentieth minute when Sebastian Nayar found himself unmarked with the latter seeing his low shot somehow parried away by Bonello to deny the Greens the draw.
The Citizens continued to press the boys in Green however it proved futile as Alba’s chance scraped past Floriana’s goal. Floriana protested for a penalty as Vella looked to have been brought down inside the Valletta penalty area by Pena Beltre, with the Greens midfielder receiving the yellow card as the referee judged the situation as a simulation, few minutes before the break Floriana were reduced to ten men as Jurgen Pisani after being fouled by Alba with referee missed to book the Argentine midfielder Pisani was sent off for misconduct as he spat to an opponent.
After the break Valletta had a chance by Piciollo with the latter’s chance ending wide at goal. Floriana had a chance by Mario Fontanella which shot was parried away with difficulty by Bonello. On the sixty seventh minute Valletta had a disallowed goal by Piciollo as the latter was judged to be offside despite the celebrations by the Valletta clan and supporters.
To add more misery to Valletta few minutes later Floriana equalised, it was Vella’s freekick who’s cross met Ruiz with the towering defender rising above the Valletta’s defence to place the ball behind Bonello to the joy of the Floriana faitful who came to the stadium to support Floriana.
In the dying minutes of the match Floriana’s custodian Akpan saved a golden opportunity opportunity as he parried away a Valletta’s header.
